Cell Circus -

look at ripe and unripe bananas. What is the difference with Iodine stain? Why?
(starch turns to sugar. Iodine is a starch detector!)

Friday Lesson Demos

Eric Muller:

expose tip of straw, rub wrapper on straw, straw will stick to wall!!

now (use new straw) do the same thing, hold gently next to person next to you. They will repel! Use one wrapper one straw will attract!

Kelly:side viewfront view

From Invitations to Science Inquiry, by Tik Liem

  1. take red (bigger straw) flatten one end
  2. cut at angle (see 2 views)
  3. blow into end that is pointed while slightly opening and closing mouth. straw will hum!
  4. as you cut the straw shorter, it will get higher pitch!
Eugene:
one circle has one dot, one reigon
2 dots, one line, 2 reigons
3 dots, 3 lines, 4 reigons
4 dots, 6 lines, 8 reigons
5 dots, 10 lines, 16 lines
6 dots, 15 lines, 31 reigons!!! (maybe 30)

Need to develop skepticism - why you need to question things! Just because they look like they are working, still need to prove things and shown for sure.

Paul:
black box - show them different things leaving, then pair them up to ask them how it happened. then groups of 4 then whole class to talk about it.

Katie:

tape page 4 to page 1
then page 2 to page 3
copy double sided on 11x17 paper

charged 4 two copies instead of 4!

Karen: taste depends on smell
Let's MAKE A CELL!!

This activity will help the students solidify their knowledge in parts of a cell, and what each part does and looks like (roughly).

Materials - Deck of Cards, pictures of organelles, descriptions of organelles

Procedure - TO make the deck: Decide which organelles to use. Here is a list of some:
Lysosome
Ribosome
ER
Golgi body
mitochondria
chloroplast
cell wall
cell membrane
nucleus
chromosome

There should be enough students to make 4 cells, so not all cards may be distributed. Since each organelle will be represented 4 times (except chloroplast, cell wall, and mitochondria will have 2 each), they can be diverse - maybe 2 pictures of the organelle and 2 written descriptions

Each nucleus should be directed to a separate corner of the room. The class needs to then make a cell by organizing themselves according to their cards. Each cell should have only one of each organelle (even though real cells have multiples!) There should be two things to look out for - one cell cannot have BOTH the picture AND description of the same organelle, AND the two plant cells should have no mitochondria and the animal cell should not have cell wall or chloroplasts. Maybe to distinguish the nucleus should say Animal or Plant. Or, instruct the chloroplasts and mitochondria to go to the corners instead of the nuclei.

I heart Science

This is where I am going to publish notes from class, and ideas for activities. I would LOVE comments on ideas for activities or improvements.

Osmosis tube-

Relative height doesn’t matter. One tube can be higher up than the other. Food coloring in one side helps to see osmosis.

Moving because of difference in concentration of THINGS that are DISSOLVED (solute)

Better to use two things that are very different – corn syrup and water for example

Water is on both sides. But side with water has MORE water, LESS dissolved stuff. Corn syrup side has LESS water and MORE solute. So where is the water going to move towards the MORE solute

Good to do right before eggs. Set up osmosis tube then go to eggs then come back at the end of the period.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE – raisins in salt water and regular water. In regular water they swell, what do they do in salt? NOT Shrink! Potato, onion, etc will shrink in salt water but raisin still plumps up!

Salt solutions don’t work – has to be actually buried in salt to work

egg in milk GAINS water

corn syrup makes egg DECREASE water and makes it wrinkled

MUMMIES - can mummify anything with just baking soda. Water is important for life!
